Has anyone ever had this done? I'm a little worried don't know what to expect my HTC gave me Amicar to help with the bleeding but I was curious if anyone ever had that done and if so what did you have to do to prep for it and mainly did it hurt?

Thanks...

Hey Big Mike:

I have not had that procedure done but I did get a tooth removed. I bled for three days and amicar did not work for me. I will keep you in prayer brother! Just because amicar did not work for me does not mean it wont work for you. It usually works well during oral procedures. Keep in touch Mike.

of course it hurts,lol.. I had my upper two wisdom teeth pulled about a year ago. to prep for it I factored up 50% the day before the procedure then 100% the day of the procedure then 100% everyday for a week after.. I was given amicar to help the clot form quicker though doing my factor was more help than the amicar..

For sure want to dose up to 100% before and try to stay above 50% for at least 48-72 hours. I had that done years ago and just treated myself, did not take Amicar.

I had all four of the wisdom teeth pulled in 2006. It was a day surgery and I was in and out and on my way. I was blessed and actually did not feel any pain for 3 days. Then I went out in the heat in August in Texas. That was a mistake. The heat caused my mouth to swell. I went from no pain to just give me the pill and leave me alone. usually you have pain for 5 to 14 days. Depends on how they extract them and if they have to cut bone. It is not as bad as many make it out to be.
Just follow the factoring schedule the doctor provides. Full 100% does just before the extraction and then every 12 hours after that for the number of days and does size the doctor recommends. I too used Amicar the week or two after they were pulled.
I am not sure if your doctor explained Amicar well enough or not. Here is what it is just in case you or others want to know. Amicar does NOT help form clotting. It was designed and is used for 1 purpose. It prevents the enzymes in your mouth from digesting the blood clots that are forming. Thus you form a clot faster. I used it ALOT growing up. I tended to bit the inside of my mouth or poke a toy in there and cut my gums. You could gag on the original Amicar flavor. Now they can hide the horrible taste somewhat. I still cringe when someone suggests Amicar. Granted Amicar may not be as effective for everyone or not everyone may need it, but everyone needs to know it has NO ability to help in clot formation. Only that it slows the natural digestion down to allow clot formation in the mouth. If you follow the guidelines on when to take Amicar it should help and allow your body to form clots in the mouth. I had alot o the Amicar left over after the time I needed it. As long as I kept up with my factor, I did not need Amicar as much.

I had two impacted wisdom teeth that broke when I was sleeping and another one that had to come out. I was quite worried myself because I had emergency surgery to have them removed. The nerve endings were exposed, which created tremedous pain.

It was fine though..a lot of bleeding. I'm not sure of your severity but I'm less than one percent. I had my treatment center run a hep-loc right after the removal because I was on q12 for 7 days:) I'm on an every-0ther-day prophy but I didn't want to put up with it for a week.

Amicar works great for me..them had me taking four every four hours. I think the community makes a bigger deal about dental work than really needs to be made. I've had a TON of work in my life and it hasn't been anything differnt than a joint bleed, so to say. As long as you follow your Hematologist's orders and you have factor in you before you have the procedure done then you will be just fine! Same with any dental work: root canals, fillings, pulled teeth. Notify doctor, get orders and it will be just like anyone else. If you do respond to Amicar it makes a big difference. Sorry Armando, it sucks it doesn't work for you! (below:)

Let us know how it goes and if you have any questions we're all here to help! Don't make a bigger deal than it really it though:) I think that can be the root of evil for a lot of situations we go through. We're responsible adults now and its not the end of the world:)!!!

Thanks to everybody for helping out!

I had to put the tooth extraction on hold for another two weeks because last week I had a Defibrillator/pacemaker put in to help with my heart condition! Over the past two weeks I've gone through at least 150k units of factor! My level at one point got up to 220% I was a super human for 12 hours!?!?!? So, next week I will have my wisdom tooth pulled. I have a treatment plan in place and I have amicar. I have been hearing from people that Amicar sometimes didn't do the trick. I wonder why? What about pain meds? They prescribed me oxycodone. Does that work?

Thanks again!

Hey Mike,

I'm sorry to hear about the heart condition! We will all be praying for you!

When it comes to pain meds I think everyone responds different to particular drugs. Guys that have built up a tolerance over the years may need something stronger like Oxycotin, (not to be confused with Oxycondone) ...I try to stay off pain meds as much as possible being they're narcotics but you/we have to take sometimes for pain, especially for wisdom teeth:) If you have found that Oxycodone works for you in the past, then it will be fine for the wisdom teeth. Sleep is key, you need something that can help with pain during the day but ultimately lets you sleep well at night. Whatever is prescribed should be fine, unless you been a pill popper for 25 years:) lol jk Don't sweat it man, just another hurdle in the life of hemophilia. I've been there and its all about your attitude and moving on!!!

God bless

Sorry to hear about the pacemaker, but I am glad to hear you are able to get the teeth taken care of soon. It will make a big difference.

As for pain, I have to say use what is given wisely. I try to avoid pain medication if at all possible, but this is a tooth pulling. USE THE MEDS! Its not the bleeding that gets you its the pain. I tend to stick to hydrocodon/tylenol3. It works for me. Most narcotic pain meds will have the same effect, but each person will feel that affect in different ways. I am slightly allergic to codon and have to be careful on low much I take. But even a low does eases my pains and I can function. Just use wisely and you should be alright.

Good Luck!

I work for a dentist, I am new to hemophilia so I don't know what quite to expect with bleeding. I would recommend going to an oral surgeon though. A general dentist can do it and for less $$ but if there are any complications
you want an oral surgeon. If your wisdom teeth have grown in some through the gums they should come out easier and heal easier. If they are still under the gums and or impacted (laying down etc) then they will cut the tissue. It normally takes a week or 2 for the tissue to heal. Expect to be soar that week. Take antiobiotics to prevent infection and you should be good.

I had wisdom teeth removed in about '74. At that time I had cyro and blood factor. I also had Amicar. As others have stated, the Amicar doesn't form clots, but helps them to not dissolve. There is pain with any tooth extraction. I have moderate hemophilia, about 5%. I may have had the extraction done in a hospital, but I had a single tooth extracted about 6 months ago at the dentist's office.

I am blessed with a general dentist who took an interest in my hemophilia in the rural city in which I live (17,000 population, Pendleton, OR). He did a great job in June. I had factor infused before the extraction, Amicar, and one infusion after the extraction. It was one of the best responses I've ever had to treatment. However, I did have fainting spells for a while on Amicar. That was connected to low blood pressure. If you're on Amicar, check blood pressure to verify that you don't have that response.

hi mike dont know if you had it done yet?
i had mine pulled on the 10th of feb i am a severe haemophilia sufferer
you will need to get a blood level check before the procedure to check your factor levels
if there 100% your good to go
once there you will just go through a standard procedure as if your not haemophiliac
after it may hurt for a few days just top up on the pain meds
the worst part for me was the anastetic
you would think 29 years of factor8 injections i wouldnt be botherd lol
but over all not bad
if you ever wanna chat pop over to my site here http://www.haemogroups.info/forums

Your Child Has Hemophlia!

I will never forget the day those words were spoken to me! All three times!

I have three sons with severe hemophilia A. With no family history this was quite A shock to us! Our HTC provided us with a wealth of information. We also found wonderful resources at our local hemophilia chapter as well as the National Hemophilia Foundation. One thing that helped me was being able to talk to other moms who had kids with hemophilia. However 26 years ago that was a bit of a challenge! I am thrilled to be part of Hemophilia Moms so I can share my experiences with all of you!

I was so frustrated all those years ago when no one could answer a question that I felt was pretty straight forwar. " How big is a bruise before it is a bleed?" I always got the same answer..."you will know!" Now how was I going to know? I had never seen a "bleed"! I barely knew what hemophilia was! However, when my son had his first bleed....I knew it! When he had his first spontanious bleed....I knew! As mothers we need to trust ourselves. Take advatage of all the resources that are available! Twenty six years ago I would have loved to be able to talk to other moms in my shoes with the click of a mouse!

How did you feel when your son was diagnoised? How did you know your child had a bleed?

Make it a great day!
Lori
